Chapter Twelve
“Ember, wake up. Ember?” Herne shook me out of my dreamless sleep, and I blinked, my eyes stuck together with goop. I rubbed them before I remembered that I had forgotten to remove my eye makeup the night before.
“You look like a demented raccoon,” Herne said, snorting. “Come on, the coffee’s ready.”
“You say that now, but I bet I’d be a big hit with the boy raccoons,” I mumbled. “Eh, let me get dressed. I’ll join you in a moment. Just make sure there’s coffee.”
He laughed, kissing me on the top of my head. “Get dressed. There will be coffee. I promise.” As he exited the tent, I sat up.
The morning was chilly and rain was spattering on the tent.
I pulled my pack onto my lap and sorted through until I found my wet-wipes. They worked on makeup, not as well as makeup remover, but they did the job. I held a small hand mirror in one hand while I wiped the residue of makeup off with the other. Finally, my face was reasonably clean and I could smell coffee wafting through the tent flaps from the campfire. That was enough incentive to get me into a clean pair of panties, my bra, jeans, and a lightweight sweater. Over that, I slid on my rain jacket. If the rain stopped, I’d switch to a denim jacket.
After strapping my daggers to my thighs again, I slid on a pair of clean socks, laced up my hiking boots, and pulled my hair back into a ponytail, then followed the trail of coffee that beckoned so enticingly.
“Morning, sunshine,” Yutani said, holding up a mug of coffee.
I accepted it gratefully. Viktor and George were crouched by the fire, holding long sticks over the fire.
“What’s for breakfast?” I asked, heading their way.
“Brats, skewered and cooked over the open fire. We’ve got buns, condiments, and chips.” Viktor motioned to the picnic table, where a line of sausages was spread out on a tinfoil platter. A bag of buns along with condiments sat next to them, and next to that was an open bag of chips.
I slid three of the brats on a long skewer and headed over to join Viktor and George. Herne was eating a handful of chips, while Yutani was already chowing down on a couple of the meaty sandwiches.
“It smells wonderful,” I said, balancing my mug of coffee on the log next to me as I held the sausages over the fire and watched them start to sizzle and pop. “How long till they’re done?”
Viktor grinned. “They take about ten minutes. Not long at all. I thought this would go down better than something cold. Plus, lots of protein and carbs to sustain us on the search.”
I glanced at the sky. The rain was trickling down now, a fine mist, but it wouldn’t be long before we were in the midst of a downpour. “Better make sure everything’s tucked into the tents or the car before we take off on the hunt today.
